Our society is very technology oriented these days, even more so than in the past. Because of this we put our digital creations out for the world to see on a daily basis. But it is important that we be aware of plagiarizing or steal others' ideas, and also protect our own works from being used in a negative way. It is also important that students know how to conduct themselves online and make sure they are using proper netiquette.
It is an important role as an educator to model what you teach. This is especially important when it comes to digital citizenship. I think that most people do not intentionally "steal" from the internet, I just believe that the education of digital citizenship, fair use, copyright, and creative commons is just not widely available or publicized. That is why I will make sure all of my students are aware of what it means to be a good digital citizen and how to be respectful of others work. I will be a good role model, inside and outside of school, when it comes to social media, discussion boards, and blogs.
Creative Commons is a way to share your works and creations and encourage others to share your works, as long as they abide by your set rules. Now that I have a much deeper understanding of this concept, I use Creative Commons licenses on all digital work that I do. This responsible digital citizenship can be found in both my classroom website and my YouTube video that I have created. In the future I will teach and encourage my students to do the same.
